We wanted to share an update on recruitment for the EXPERTS-ALS study, including news of a brief temporary pause and how the platform is developing.
A Brief Pause
Recruitment has been going well over the last six months, and we are working hard to open the study at even more sites across the UK.
Due to a UK-wide shortage of Salbutamol syrup, we need to temporarily pause enrolling new participants for about 6 to 8 weeks. We expect to restart recruitment in early December once stocks are back to normal.
Why do we need to pause?
In order to run the study fairly, we need to be able to randomly match participants between at least two active drugs. Because Salbutamol is briefly unavailable, Doxycycline is currently our only available treatment arm.
What about current trial participants?
Our team is working hard to source and
move existing Salbutamol supplies between trial sites so current participants can stay
on their drug safely. We will keep study staff at sites updated on how this is going.
Latest updates on the platform’s development
We are taking steps to make the study stronger and protect against drug shortages in the future:
Three new treatments are joining soon:
We are working quickly to add three new treatments to the study, including our first pharmaceutical partner supported drug, with a second partner treatment already progressing through preparation.
Taking part again:
Soon, participants who have already finished their time in EXPERTS-ALS will be able to join the study again (if they meet the right criteria).
We will share regular updates on our restart timeline on this website and directly with trial sites.
