Current Status: Open to Recruitment

The first participant was recruited to EXPERTS-ALS on 22nd November 2024. We are currently allocating participants to one of the first three drugs to be evaluated.

Current Study Drugs

The drugs currently being evaluated in EXPERTS-ALS are:

Metformin
Nifedipine
Ropinirole

Recruitment

As of September 30th 2025, 74 participants have consented to the study, of which 49 have been randomised.

First Study Analysis

The data collected during EXPERTS-ALS will be reviewed regularly whilst people are still taking the drugs, not just at the end when everyone is finished. This is known as an interim analysis. We expect the first analysis to take place in early 2026.

If the results meet the study team’s pre-agreed criteria the drug will continue to be tested in the study. It is important to remember that if a drug continues in the study, this doesn’t necessarily mean that it definitely reduces NfL levels, it just means that we need to gather more information.

If the results do not meet the criteria, the drug will not be tested further in the trial and no new participants will receive that drug. Participants who are taking a drug which is removed from the study will continue with the drug until their next scheduled visit. They will also be asked to continue to attend appointments for the full 6 months as this data will be useful, even after a drug has been removed from the trial.

We will make all participants aware of the outcome of the interim analyses as soon as possible.
